41. Justin Snider, Clever HS (MO)
Saturday Jul 31, 2021
Saturday Jul 31, 2021
In 2021, a high school student-athlete at Clever High School (MO) walked into the woods near home and hanged himself. He was discovered by his oldest brother. His dad and next-oldest brother pulled him down, followed shortly thereafter by his mom's arrival.
There was no warning. His parents knew he was struggling with school work and that he was using marijuana on a regular basis. He was encouraged often by his family to, as him mom says, "get his head out of his ass," but there was never an inkling that he was at-risk of taking his own life.
His high school baseball coach, Justin Snider, joined the show to discuss what it was like from the moment a school official came down to the field during practice to tell him and the spiral it sent him, and his players, on over the ensuing months. And while it's just one coach, and one team, it provides some insight into how coaches can approach mental health.

Saturday Dec 26, 2020
The head girls basketball coach at South Salem High School (Salem, Oregon) jumps on the line to share his thoughts on the current state of women's sports, what it was like for his team to have their season end just hours before playing in the state semifinal game in 2020, and how having a daughter has changed his life - for the better.
Coach Lewis took over a program with a long tradition of winning and he opens up here about some of the challenges that come along with trying to put his own stamp on the things while also honoring the history that came before him. A major part of that: bringing the program into the 21st century with fresh logos, a social media presence, and yes, free t-shirts. He also wraps the conversation up with a self-reflective look into how he's adapted and changed over the years.
You can reach Coach Lewis via email.

11. Chris Miller, West Linn HS (OR)
Saturday Dec 12, 2020
Saturday Dec 12, 2020
The 13th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft joins the Club to discuss all things football. 21 years after his NFL career was cut short by concussions, Miller shares why he thinks football is now safer than ever, why high school sports are important, what he does to build leaders within the West Linn football program, and much more!
Miller was also a highly-touted baseball prospect who was drafted in the 17th round of the 1983 MLB draft out of Sheldon High School and eventually played one Minor League Baseball season in the Seattle Mariners organization in 1986. But he also played QB for the Oregon Ducks from 1983-86 before the Atlanta Falcons selected him in the first round of the '87 NFL Draft. Miller went on to throw for over 19,000 yards in the NFL, and at the time in 1991 became the 5th youngest player to reach the 10,000 yard mark. He endured dozens of concussions that resulted in short-term memory less, ultimately sending him into early retirement after the 1995 season. He returned to play one season for the Denver Broncos in 1999.
Since then, he has been the head football coach at South Eugene High School and West Linn High School, in addition to serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals and the offensive coordinator for the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2020. After the XFL disbanded during the pandemic, Miller returned to the high school coaching ranks.
